Climate in Barbados

Barbados enjoys a year round tropical climate that is perfect for going to the beach. The weather is generally sunny and warm with only brief occasions of intense rain that occurs generally clearing back to sunshine very shortly afterwards. Our summer temperatures hit average highs of 32ºC and our winters hit average temperatures of around 28ºC. The great thing is that we have constant wind blowing off the Atlantic that keeps the island's daytime temperatures at very comfortable levels. Barbados' dry season starts in January and ends in June when the generally wetter conditions start and we head into the hurricane season.

Rum Shops in Barbados

Rum Shops in Barbados

Rum shops across Barbados are simply social grounds. Here is where the people of Barbados gather to have a drink or in local parlance 'fire one'. Rum shops have also become a gathering ground for playing dominoes or in local parlance 'slam uh dom'. Dominoes is a very popular game that attracts quite a bit of attention as players are not only loud but the very action of slamming dominoes on the sometimes make shift table is one that creates quite a stir. You would be amazed at the level of conversation that goes on at some of these rum shops. Conversations can vary from politics to cricket to gossip. Simply put, just about anything goes in a rum shop.

Sugar Factories in Barbados

Sugar Factories in Barbados

The seventeenth (17th) century saw a historic introduction of the sugarcane industry to Barbados by the Dutch. As a result of this introduction, sugarcane now outweighed both tobacco and cotton with regards to being a lucrative crop. Initially, sugar was used on the island for internal purposes of feedstock, fuel and rum production but as larger plantations exported sugar, Barbados was seen through the eyes of the British as a major attraction.

Mullins Beach Barbados

Mullins Beach Barbados

If you want to combine a trip to Mullins Beach with some shopping, why not visit some of the many shops in nearby Speightstown, and then come back to Mullins Beach to watch a Barbados sunset. Mullins Beach faces west, so this is a good place to sit with a drink and watch as the sun falls into the deep blue Caribbean Sea, creating a palette of magnificent hues on the twilight skyline.

Festivals in Barbados
Festivals are seen as a time of celebration and feasting. Not much, if any at all, changes with that description when it comes to festivals on the island of Barbados. Music, mouthwatering cuisine, good times, relaxation, the reconnection of friends and family all occur once there's a festival on the island.

The Chase Vault - Barbados

The Chase Vault - Barbados

Though the consequential events have long ceased, the Chase Vault in Barbados is still filled with mystery & intrigue.

There being no reasonable explanation, the vault was totally abandoned and the coffins therein were re-located. To this day, the Chase Vault structure remains vacant in the parish of Christ Church, Barbados… What a tangled web!

Red Legs in Barbados

Have you ever heard the term "poor whites, ecky beckies, poor backras or edey white mice"? Red legs in Barbados are a dying close-knit community that can be found predominantly in the parish of St. John but also scattered throughout other parts of Barbados. These are the many direct descendants of the Scottish and Irish who were removed from their homes and sent against their will way back in 1655 to the Caribbean.

Ossie Moore

Characters such as Ossie Moore have become ingrained into Barbados' folklore. The name itself is a name that just about every child in Barbados has heard about and every adult has joked about at some point in time. I remember as a child hearing neighbours talk about Ossie Moore seeing a fruit in a tree, climbed the tree to get confirmation on if the fruit was ripe, once confirmed, he climbed down and proceeded to throw rocks at the same fruit in an effort to knock it down. His name was synonymous with a plethora of jokes that we often time just couldn't get enough of.
